Running is Important to Me. This is What I’m Doing About It.

It’s a cool photo with running cause I write about running.

Read this quote today and wanted to share:

“Growing up, we run. But at some point in your running career you have to ask yourself why are you actually doing this? Is it because you’re good at it or is it because running is something that is deeply important to you? If the answer is ‘yes, running is deeply important to me’ then a follow up might be ‘well what are you going to do about it?” — Drew Hunter

I’m running because it is deeply important to me. I’ve decided that running is something I want to give my soul to. Giving my soul to running is a beautifully romantic idea but lacks substance. What does that mean?

Or better yet, what are you going to do about it?

This is a difficult question because running is inherently selfish. When I go out for a run, the only person it benefits is me. And while it is great to be selfish at times, I know that if I don’t try to make my running bigger than me, I will feel empty inside.

So, what am I doing about it? I’m trying to share the sport with as many as people as I can. A little bit of that takes place in my writing, but the main way I share the sport is through coaching.

I’ve found that coaching has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I get the opportunity to coach middle school students and this usually means I am their first introduction to running. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.

As a middle school coach, I have the responsibility to introduce the sport to kids and hopefully not ruin it for the rest of their life. I selfishly hope as a coach that some of my athletes are beginning their journey as lifelong runners. That they are beginning to fall in love with the sport. That they are beginning to see the parallels between life and running.

Running is deeply important to me. What am I doing about it? Coaching, trying to bring the sport to as many people as I can.

Here is the article I got the quote from, worth your time.
